Swedish universities have long been working to put academic knowledge to practical use through innovation support in the form of consulting, funding, and networking. Traditionally, the focus has been on the commercialization of technical and medical research. In recent years, an increased focus on societal challenges and sustainable development has led to a broadening of scope toward what the report refers to as innovation for the public good.
One example of this trend is the so-calledimpact labsthat have been established at several Swedish universities. Here, researchers and staff receive support to translate knowledge into solutions that benefit society.
The report compiles experiences from existing and planned impact labs. It provides an overview of their role, working methods, and significance, and highlights who participates and the benefits the labs generate for individuals, higher education institutions, and society.
