Bauhaus of the Seas Sails in Malmö – The Impact of Ocean Literacy and Nature-Based Reefs in Malmö (2026)

Bauhaus of the Seas Sails Report

This report examines the impacts of a pilot project carried out in Malmö as part of the Horizon Europe project Bauhaus of the Seas Sails (2022–2025). Bauhaus of the Seas Sails (BoS) is an initiative within the New European Bauhaus (NEB) that develops and tests solutions for more sustainable, inclusive, and aesthetically appealing cities and neighborhoods in Europe. The work focuses on seven coastal and waterfront cities—Hamburg, Venice, Malmö, Rotterdam, Lisbon, Oeiras, and Genoa—as well as a cross-border nature area between the Netherlands and Belgium.

Within each pilot, innovative initiatives (“drops”) are tested with the aim of creating ripple effects (“ripples”) and, over time, contributing to long-term changes (“waves”).

About Bauhaus of the Seas Sails Malmö

Bauhaus of the Seas Sails Malmö was a pilot project within the New European Bauhaus that, between 2023 and 2025, explored how a new maritime culture could emerge in Malmö. Through collaboration between the Department of Art, Culture, and Communication (K3) and the Forum for Social Innovation Sweden at Malmö University, the Marine Knowledge Center, and local stakeholders, opportunities were created where Malmö residents and marine life were viewed as neighbors with a shared responsibility.
