Building Capacity for a Sustainable Society
Building Capacity for a Sustainable Society (BuiCaSuS) was an EU project that ran from 2021 to 2023. Its goal was to strengthen cooperation between countries and facilitate the exchange of experiences to establish or develop national centers for social innovation, in line with the European Social Fund and the EaSI program.
Building Capacity for a Sustainable Society
Building Capacity for a Sustainable Society (BuiCaSuS) was a cross-border EU project. The project was one of six consortia selected by the European Commission to investigate how social innovation can contribute to more sustainable societies.
The goal was to increase knowledge about social innovation and to establish or further develop national competence centres for social innovation.
The project was divided into four subprojects:
- Mapping of Social Innovation
Focused on analyzing the current state of social innovation in the partner countries’ ecosystems, including strengths, weaknesses, and inspiring examples. The work was based on a criteria-based mapping of actors and experiences, drawing on existing research and reports. - Cross-border learning and scaling up
This involved learning from how other countries work with social innovation in practice and testing the dissemination or scaling up of social innovation projects across countries. - Methods, Tools, and Collaboration
Aimed to strengthen collaboration and the exchange of experiences regarding methods and approaches to social innovation among stakeholders in partner countries, as well as to build capacity and identify national priorities for continued development. - Strategies and Competence Centres
Focused on developing strategies to establish or strengthen national competence centres for social innovation, with support from the European Social Fund.

Seven partners from four countries participated in BuiCaSuS:
- Spain (the Spanish ESF Managing Authority – UAFSE, and the State Secretary for Social Rights – SSSR),
- France (Avise),
- Latvia (Society Integration Foundation – SIF) and
- Sweden (Forum for Social Innovation Sweden Reach for Change, and Inkludera).
