This fall, a commissioned training program in social innovation will begin. The online course is aimed at innovation– and business development professionals at incubators, innovation offices, and other promotional organizations in Sweden.
Malin Lindberg is a professor of gender and technology at Luleå University of Technology, an affiliated professor at the Center for Civil Society Research at Marie Cederschiöld University College, and now also a visiting professor of social innovation at Malmö University, affiliated with Forum for Social Innovation Sweden. She came up with the idea for the commissioned course“Social Innovation in Theory and Practice —How Can We Support Innovative Solutions to Societal Challenges?”she taught a doctoral course on a similar topic.
Innovation advisor provided the idea for contract education
InInnovationAdvisor Camilla Norberg Hansen, at Malmö University, wondered if the doctoral course could be offered to other target groups.
– I’ve been looking for a higher-level course in social innovation. I contacted Malin to find out if you could apply even if you weren’t a doctoral. You couldn’t, says Camilla Norberg Hansen.
– For me, as an innovation advisor, it’s about gathering the latest knowledge on social innovation. The field is growing (that is, the ideas we receive) among both our students and researchers. Therefore, , it’s important to stay at the forefront of knowledge acquisition in the field. In addition, meeting and discussing these interesting issues with other course participants, she continues she adds.
It is important that knowledge about social innovation becomes accessible
The course is aimed at innovation– and business development professionals, for example at incubators and innovation offices,innovation offices, but also to other promotingorganizations in Sweden.

The course provides an insight into Swedish and international research on social innovation. It provides concrete examples of social innovation in various sectors of society, as well as practical tools to support the development of social innovations. Malin Lindberg, who leads the course, has many years of experience studying and supporting social innovation incollaboration between academia, business and society.
Online sessions are combined with reading assignments and homework
The course begins in September and ends in December. It consists of three digital coursesessions, as well as homework assignments and reading, which corresponds to 5 college credits. The first session focuses on what social innovation is, the second focuses on how social innovation can be supported, and the final session addresses how can move from theory to practice.
