Southern Sweden Design Days (SSDD) is a new annual international design festival organized by Form/Design Center and held at Lokstallarna in Malmö from May 19–22. The aim is to showcase design with a focus on sustainability, collaboration, development, and innovation. Over four days, various participants will showcase design from a variety of perspectives through exhibitions and various productions, workshops, talks, and other events.
The Department of Art, Culture, and Communication (K3) at Malmö University participated in SSDD last year as well, when the event was held entirely online. This year, most of the event will take place at Lokstallarna in Kirseberg, although part of the program will be streamed live on the SSDD website.
Forum for Social Innovation SwedenForum for Social Innovation Sweden is participating in SSDD for the first time.
“For us, it’s important to participate and be visible in a wide variety of settings and reach out to new audiences—not just our partners, the usual players, and those already on board with social innovation,” says Sara Bjärstorp.
Forum for Social Innovation Sweden two discussions on its own and one in collaboration with K3 and Skissfestivalen, all in English. The discussion “Conversation on Design, Social Innovation, and Sustainability” will feature the well-known Ezio Manzini, who has worked in design for sustainability for three decades and is currently chair of the DESIS Network and honorary professor at the Politecnico di Milano; Pia Mcaleenan, head of the Innovation Lab at SVID; Per-Anders Hillgren, professor of interaction design at K3, and Sara Bjärstorp of Forum for Social Innovation Sweden.
Participants in "Conversation on the New European Bauhaus " include Malmö City Architect Finn Williams, Tiffany Fukuma, CEO of Trans Europe Halles, Torben Klitgaard, CEO of Bloxhub, and Anna Seravalli, a design researcher at K3. Both discussions will be moderated by Lotta Orban.
In " Green and Just Future," researchers Anna Seravalli and Per Linde from K3 and Marwa Dabaieh from the Department of Urban Studies discuss how design and architecture can explore, define, and develop innovations and social sustainability, with Pernilla Glaser moderating.
During SSDD, K3 will showcase student work and projects from Graphic Design, Visual Communication, and Product Design at its booth under the heading “K3 Exhibits!” and will host two workshops: “Cook Your Own Bio-Polymer!” with Charlotte Asbjørn Sörensen and Jonas Larsen, and “Design Thing for the Baltic Sea,” led by students under the guidance of Li Jönsson. In “Design Research for all senses,” Simon Niedenthal, Åsa Harvard Maare, and Charlotte Asbjørn Sörensen will present and discuss how design research can explore and create new methods for multisensory learning and interaction.
