The Social Fabric

In the Impact Innovation project "The Social Fabric," Forum for Social Innovation Sweden is collaborating Forum for Social Innovation Sweden RISE, Fastighetsägarna, and A Beautiful Soup to mobilize stakeholders committed to creating social value in the built environment.

How can we create better conditions for living environments with strong social sustainability in our communities? How can we work together to build a network of places where people can live the lives they want to live? A network of places that is socially, economically, and ecologically sustainable. This is what the stakeholders and participants in the preparatory project “The Social Fabric” are exploring, as part of the innovation program Impact Innovation, a joint initiative by Vinnova, the Swedish Energy Agency, and Formas.

Today’s challenges call for new ways of bringing together individuals, groups, and stakeholders to create lasting value, which in turn will require changes at the systemic level. To build a sustainable society where everyone can find a place and a social context, we need to understand which systems need to change. Here, stakeholders and organizations from different industries and sectors must work across boundaries and share knowledge, experiences, and ideas.

“It feels fantastic that the mobilization is underway and that so many people want to be part of our work! There is a real need for an innovation program grounded in social sustainability, which is unique to our project,” says Magnus Johansson, senior researcher at RISE Research Institutes of Sweden and a member of the project team.

Forum for Social Innovation Sweden expertise on co-creation processes, specifically the Coalition Model, which is a meeting format designed to foster understanding and share knowledge by bringing together stakeholders from all sectors. The Coalition Model is divided into four parts and aims to build understanding of the systemic changes that are needed and to share knowledge on how these changes can be achieved.

“We want to strengthen civil society’s ability to develop and manage attractive communities by driving processes that bring together a diverse range of citizens and stakeholders. Together, we can develop new, innovative forms of collaboration focused on ideas that promote social sustainability in the built environment,” says Sara Bjärstorp, Executive Director atForum for Social Innovation Sweden a member of the project group.
