How can social innovation help us address our major societal challenges? What do these innovations look like, and what can be done to support the development of more social innovations?

We take many of the services that the welfare state provides us with today for granted. Libraries, fire departments, prenatal care, unemployment insurance, preschool, and public dental care. Urban farming, the sharing economy, Fair Trade, Wikipedia, and Creative Commons are more recent social innovations that most people are familiar with today.

There is a great need to explain what is meant by social innovation and what role social innovation plays—or can play—in our society today and in the future.

By highlighting stories and concrete examples of social innovations—ranging from large-scale collaborative projects to individual initiatives—we aim to illustrate the breadth and potential of social innovation. And perhaps, in doing so, we can discover, identify, and highlight today’s social innovations that have the potential to become tomorrow’s major social innovations.

Social innovations, like innovation in general, do not happen on their own. All innovation requires a framework that identifies and scales up good ideas—a support system. But what does such a support system look like when it comes to fostering social innovations? And how can we support the development of the libraries, maternity care, and preschools of the future?

These are some of the questions we’ve asked ourselves as we’ve worked on compiling this book, which we hope will appeal to a wider audience. It features 100 examples of social innovations in Sweden, from north to south. By highlighting stories and concrete examples—ranging from larger, broader collaborative projects to individual innovator initiatives—we aim to illustrate the breadth and potential of social innovation. And perhaps identify today’s social innovations that have the potential to become tomorrow’s major social innovations.

– Sweden is an international leader in social innovation. This applies both to major innovations such as the “welfare state” and to smaller, local forms of social entrepreneurship. Social entrepreneurs create innovation for the benefit of society. They create social innovation. Perhaps this could prove to be the first building block for Folkhemmet 2.0, says Professor Lars Hulgård, who has written an introductory text on the opportunities and challenges surrounding social innovation.
