Om Bauhaus of the Seas Sails Malmö
Bauhaus of the Seas Sails Malmö var ett pilotprojekt inom New European Bauhaus. Det pågick från januari 2023 till och med december 2025 och syftade till att utforska en ny havskultur i Malmö, en kultur där Malmöbor och livet i havet levde som grannar som tog hand om varandra.
Projektet engagerade invånare, lokala aktörer inom kultur och natur samt livet i Öresund. Det drevs i Malmö genom ett samarbete mellan Institutionen för konst, kultur och kommunikation (K3) och Mötesplats Social Innovation vid Malmö universitet samt Marint Kunskapscenter.
Tillsammans med lokala aktörer i Malmö utforskades olika vägar för hur en ny havskultur kunde växa fram. Arbetet byggde på övergripande principer som hållbarhet, inkludering, estetik och lokal förankring. Frågor som kopplades till dessa principer var:
- Hållbarhet: hur skapar vi välbefinnande för både människor och livet i havet?
- Inkludering: hur kan vi främja möten mellan olika grupper och gemenskaper i Malmö som inte brukar träffas?
- Estetik: hur kan vi använda kulturella och kreativa aktiviteter för att främja nya möten mellan Malmöbor och livet i havet?
- Lokal förankring: hur kan vi skapa synergier med olika långsiktiga processer och mellan etablerade samt nya aktörer och plattformar?
De lokala aktörerna engagerades både genom ett Sea Forum och genom ett program för så kallade Havsambassadörer. Sea Forum bestod av aktörer som arbetade med någon av principerna hållbarhet, inkludering eller estetik, och hade i uppdrag att fungera som rådgivare till projektägarna.
Sea Forums uppdrag var att ta fram en långsiktig strategi för arbetet som sträckte sig bortom projektets tidsram, att bidra till rekryteringen av Havsambassadörer samt att utvärdera arbetet.
Havsambassadörerna var aktörer som skapade upplevelser där Malmöbor fick nya insikter om, och en starkare känslomässig koppling till, havet och livet som fanns där.
Malmö universitets medverkan i Bauhaus of the Seas Sails
Malmö universitet ledde inte bara pilotprojektet Bauhaus of the Seas Sails Malmö inom det EU-finansierade projektet Bauhaus of the Sea Sails, utan hade även ansvar för arbetspaket 2. Arbetspaketet handlade om att utveckla en co-designprocess för alla partners, så att New European Bauhaus‑principen om inkludering efterlevdes och att alla principer uppfylldes på ett sätt som var lokalt förankrat. Detta arbete genomfördes av Anna Seravalli, Ann Light och Froukje Zumbrink.
Projektet beforskades av Ann Light, Anna Seravalli samt Anders Emilsson från Institutionen för konst, kultur och kommunikation vid Malmö universitet.
Vår vision
En regenerativ stad där vi tänker, pratar om och interagerar med livet i havet på ett nytt sätt – en ny havskultur. För att påbörja utvecklingen av denna havskultur ämnar vi bilda en Ocean Culture Hub.
Bakgrund
Bauhaus of the Seas Sails var det sjätte EU‑finansierade Lighthouse‑projektet som arbetade med att utveckla så kallade Lighthouse Demonstrators inom satsningen New European Bauhaus.
Projektet utgick från frågan: Hur kan kultur och delaktighet användas för att skapa mer regenerativa relationer mellan europeiska städer och haven?
I projektet deltog Portugal, Spanien, Italien, Nederländerna, Belgien, Tyskland och Sverige, med totalt 18 partners. Dessa partners representerade lokala myndigheter, universitet och civilsamhällesorganisationer.
Arbetet samordnades av Interactive Technologies Institute vid Instituto Superior Técnico, Lissabons universitet.
Havsambassadörer
Vi vill att fler Malmöbor, med deras olika kulturer och erfarenheter, får möjligheten att engagera sig i att utforska och skapa en hälsosam relation till havet. För detta ändamål lanserade vi ett Open Call där individer och organisationer kunde ansöka om att bli havsambassadörer.
Som havsambassadör får man finansiella medel för att skapa och genomföra kreativa och inkluderande aktiviteter som involverar Malmöbor i att stärka deras relation med livet i havet. Nedan hittar du våra fem havsambassadörs-initiativ som fått finansiering via vårt Open Call.
Kompass för havsambassadörer: Navigera mot regenerativa kulturer (2024)
Kompass för havsambassadörer är en arbetsbok utformad för att inspirera och vägleda individer och samhällen i att främja regenerativa kulturer. Vi – Malmö universitet, Marint Kunskapscenter och Mötesplats Social Innovation – välkomnar alla som är intresserade av ämnet att använda den i sitt dagliga liv eller arbete.
Ellen Bjerborn
Ellen Bjerborn is an artist, formerly a designer, from Malmö. She mainly works with themes around nature, spirituality, and technology using lens-based media such as video.
Skapa med Malmös vatten
During 2024, Ellen hosted a series of workshops held by Malmö’s historically and ecologically important waters. The workshop participants learned more about the site and the species that live there. The participants then created freely in sketchbooks, which were provided, from their impressions of the place and the species. As the participants became more knowledgeable of the challenges that the sea creatures face, and of their quirks and traits, a strengthened sense of solidarity and community with the sea was formed, which Ellen hopes will lead to more sustainable choices in the long run. This year, during 2025, Ellen is creating ”The Creator’s Book”. The Creator’s Book contains drawing- and writing-exercises that will make you reflect on your relationship with the ocean and the ocean’s relationship with you! On June 8th, during the World Ocean Day, Ellen will launch the book and everyone is welcome to try one of the exercises.

Yénika Castillo Muñoz & Stefan Andersson
We are Yénika Castillo Muñoz, a designer and design teacher from Pachuca, Mexico and Stefan Andersson, a theatre and performance artist, and teacher from Lund, Sweden. We’re going to do an art project called Flod 57, where we will do three outings to the sea with different groups of people and an exhibition and storytelling event at Rosengårds library with participants from the outings.
We will travel together to the sea with bus route 5 and 7, where we will explore the sea in several ways, invite to share experiences and memories from the sea, and eat together. We imagine the exhibition to include photos; some under water, text and live storytelling.
We hope to achieve:
Curiosity for, and a deeper connection to the sea and its inhabitants, through exploration and oral storytelling.
A meeting place for humans in Malmö where multiple perspectives and experiences of the sea, and diverse human life stories, are allowed.
An invitation leading to more people feeling at home by the sea; nearness, and understanding how important it is for human life, which we hope will lead to respect, knowledge and sharing with more people.

Land Art: Eileen Laurie, Therese Carnemalm
& Lucy Cathcart-Frödén
Land Art i Skåne are three artists who work with images, sound and nature. They invite people to experience the sea using all their senses and to make art in response. During the workshops held in 2024 and 2025, participants create Land Art using nature and reflect on our collective relationship with the sea and the non-human life forms that live in it. The workshops take place at different locations around Malmö that are connected to the sea. They have created an ocean-themed sound walk that you can listen to at SoundCloud.
Land Art uses the methods and processes of shared art making to learn about the different marine environments in the city. Through working with the senses and creativity, participants experience Malmö’s different bodies of water and understand how these are connected. After the workshops, participants will have a stronger sense of Malmö’s identity as a coastal city and of our responsibility to, and interdependence with, the sea and all of its inhabitants. Land Art i Skåne hopes participants will be inspired to keep creating in their daily lives: with nature, with the sea, and with others.
During 2025, the team will organize a Land Art workshop on the 18th of May at 14:00-16:00 in Slottsparken, as well as both a Land Art workshop and a Sound Art workshop at the World Ocean Day on the 8th of June at the South Wharf Basin.
Strandfynd
Strandfynd is a collaboration between the dancers Lisa Holström, Petra Nilsson and Rebell Gitarrkvartett (Hannes Wikström, Jonathan Bernhardsson, Henning Gren and Emil Miranda Holmgren). Together, the ensemble has created an interactive music and dance performance around beach findings from Malmö’s beloved Ribersborg beach. Through these beach findings, the participants, together with the ensemble, will be able to create an organic theatrical multi-art piece. How do you dance like swaying seaweed? How can a guitar sound like a seashell? What’s the sonic difference between a black and a white stone from the ocean? In the performance “Strandfynd” you will be able to experience both a music and dance performance as a traditional audience as well as an interactive choreography of music, dance and sounds. The performance invites the participant to create emotional connections, interest and engagement for the local marine habitats. Read more here.

Multispecies Sauna
During 2024, the organisations Drevet, Feral Malmö and Malmö Mobile Queer-Sauna collaborated, offering Malmö residents an encounter with the sea in a new way. Through the sauna, they created a heterotopia – a temporary physical and social space that allowed people to re-evaluate their relationships to each other and to the sea. In the sauna, the participants were invited to explore the role of living species on the local coast and, from these perspectives, discuss how urban space and industry in Malmö have shaped land and water. By bringing the perspectives of other species into a discussion about the future of Malmö, new allies to shape sustainable and vibrant environments in coastal urban spaces can be found, for both humans and non-humans.
